Traction battery packs in hybrid vehicles undergo constant charging and discharging in response to power train load conditions, resulting in heat generation within the cell due to the resistive losses. Since battery performance and life are strongly affected by temperature, active battery cooling is necessary to maintain the cell temperatures within allowable temperature limits.

Temperature uniformity across the pack is also very important, as permanent temperature gradients cause the cells to wear out at different rates, ultimately leading to pack failure.

ALP packs feature an electronically controlled cooling system that maintains the temperature of the cells within the allowable limits and with uniform temperature distribution. Depending on the power train architecture, the cooling system can use forced air cooling, an integrated air conditioning system, or an external air conditioning system. For certain heavy duty applications, liquid cooling can be implemented. The thermal management system also has the capability to heat the battery after prolonged storage in low temperatures.
